  • Aeroplan Elite status doesn’t just benefit Air Canada travellers.
  • If you currently have Aeroplan status, you can use your Aeroplan credit card to keep it until December 31, 2023.
  • You will need to earn 30,000 Aeroplan points by spending with your card by November 30, 2022.
  • Read the Insider’s guide to the best airline credit cards.

Aeroplan Elite status can be extremely valuable, even for frequent fliers whose presence will never reach an Air Canada fuselage. Depending on the status you have achieved, you will enjoy many benefits with Air Canada partners such as United Airlines, Swiss, Lufthansa and many others, such as:

  • Bonus rewards for paid flights
  • Priority recording
  • Additional checked baggage allowance
  • Star Alliance airport lounges
  • Priority boarding

If you have an Aeroplan co-branded credit card, like the Aeroplan® credit card from Chase (read our review), you now have the option to extend your current elite status level for 2023. Here’s how it works — and how to reach elite status quickly so you can take advantage of this promotion.

We focus here on the rewards and benefits that come with each card. These cards aren’t worth it if you’re paying interest or late fees. When using a credit card, it’s important to pay off your balance in full each month, make your payments on time, and only spend what you can afford.

More information
  • Earn a welcome airline bonus worth up to 50,000 points after spending $3,000 + up to 51,000 points through 10 total points on travel and dining
  • $95 annual fee
  • Earn 3x the points for every dollar spent at grocery stores, restaurants and Air Canada directly.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • First checked bag free.
  • 500 bonus points for every $2,000 spent in a calendar month.
  • Earn 1x points for every dollar spent on all other purchases.

If you hold any Aeroplan credit card, you are eligible for this limited time offer.

When you earn 30,000 points with your Aeroplan Card by November 30, 2022, your current Aeroplan Elite status will automatically be extended until December 31, 2023 — no registration required. All points you earn with the card, including bonus spending categories, count towards the 30,000 point threshold. For example, if you have the Aeroplan® credit card, you will get:

  • 3 points per dollar on Air Canada purchases
  • 3 points per dollar on meals
  • 3 points per dollar in grocery stores
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else
  • 500 points for every $2,000 spent in a calendar month, up to a maximum of 1,500 points per calendar month

That means you could eventually reach elite status by spending as little as $9,334 over two months.

Any spend you’ve ever made with your Aeroplan Card from January 1, 2022 will retroactively count towards the 30,000 points you need. Plus, if you have more than one Aeroplan credit card, you can combine spending between cards. And if you have authorized users on your Aeroplan Card, their spending will count toward your goal.

There are a few notable exclusions as to what do not account: Welcome bonuses, as well as points that you transfer to Aeroplan from another account, are not eligible. You will also need to ensure that the points appear in your account before the end of the promotion period to be eligible. It is therefore a good idea to reach the expenses as soon as possible.

If you don’t have an Aeroplan credit card but you To do have elite status, you can still participate in this promotion by opening an Aeroplan credit card and earning 30,000 points by November 30, 2022. If you have already reached this 30,000 point requirement, the status extension elite will begin in June 2022.

And if you don’t have Aeroplan Elite status, you can open the Aeroplan® credit card and automatically get Aeroplan 25K status for the remainder of the first calendar year you open it, plus the calendar year next. This card also comes with a Welcome Flight Reward certificate (worth up to 50,000 points) after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months, plus 10x points on travel and dining at during the first six months (up to 51,000 points).

At the end of the line

If you have Aeroplan Elite status that is about to expire, it might be worth opening an Aeroplan credit card to secure your current Elite status level until December 31, 2023. This is especially true if you have a high status level but I haven’t traveled lately. It’s a fantastic way to keep your valuable benefits for another year while you return to work by reskilling as the travel industry continues to pick up steam.
